Volkswagen is investing in climate protection projects to compensate for unavoidable CO 2. Projects are certified according to the highest international standards Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) as well as Climate Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCB) or Gold Standard.

The production of an electric vehicle currently generates significantly more CO 2 than that of cars with a combustion engine—around 150% on average. However, the Volkswagen brand is setting up production of its coming electric ID. and is setting up a production facility in Poland for this purpose.

With synthetic diesel fuels of the EN15940 standard, CO 2 emissions can be reduced by up to 100% compared to fossil diesel. Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO or renewable diesel), which is already commercially available today, reduces CO 2 emissions by up to 90%. DB Series 294 locomotive with an 8V 4000 R41 mtu engine running on HVO.

Business must do even more for climate protection, even in difficult times, said Franz Fehrenbach, chairman of the Bosch board of management, an a talk at the Baden-Württemberg sustainability congress held in Stuttgart on 25 March ( Nachhaltigkeitskongress Baden-Württemberg 2009 ). In Fehrenbach’s view, this would be a breach of trust.

ISO will develop an International Standard (ISO 13065) to address sustainability issues linked to bioenergy. The standard will be produced by a new ISO project committee, ISO/PC 248, Sustainability criteria for bioenergy. We clearly need biomass as a source of renewable energy.
