has brought 67 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) solid waste and recycling trucks to serve customers throughout southern New Jersey and in Philadelphia. The new CNG fleet will replace older diesel-powered trucks. These trucks run cleaner and quieter, and will help to make the local environment healthier for future generations.

These reductions have come from strong efforts to reduce on-road vehicle emissions, especially diesel particulate matter. The State’s organic waste should be put to beneficial use, such as for soil amendments/compost, electrical generation, transportation fuel, and pipeline-injected renewable natural gas.

As the trend toward cleaner technologies with reduced exhaust emissions continues through the use of catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters (DPF), and improved fuels and engines, non-exhaust PM will soon surpass exhaust emissions and may well become dominant by 2020 both in terms of emissions and contributions to air quality.

Mikhail Chester and Arpad Horvath inventoried on-road, rail, and air travel to determine energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and criteria air pollutant (CAP) emissions (excluding PM, lead, and ozone due to lack of data). Peak urban diesel buses showed the best overall energy consumption and GHG emissions per PKT.
