In the US, diesel never had the same traction, due the abundance of cheap gas. Petrol-burning engines are soon to see the same fate. Next year, the EU is tightening its restrictions with a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025 for both cars and vans. By 2035, all new cars and vans registered in Europe will be zero-emission.

In addition, it is subject to similar refining, storage and distribution costs currently associated with petrol and diesel, including upstream CO2 emissions where the electricity required is usually generated from fossil fuels. Hence its supply would not be cheap, renewable nor sustainable in the long term.

With prices starting at £29,800 (and rising to £40,390), the A5 Cabriolet isn’t cheap. Running costs won’t be cheap either. litre TSI petrol engine officially consumes a decent-enough 41.5mpg, with CO2 emissions of 156g/km, placing it in Band G for road tax (£150 per year).

While the MX-30 Electric’s now been discontinued, head to Mazda’s website and the petrol-powered MX-30 M Hybrid (which is the mildest hybrid known to man), quite comically, costs less than those ex-demo MX-30 Electrics. A petrol MX-30 Astina’s over $46,000 drive-away.
