One note – if you want the magnetic ride package, and I think you do, you need to first buy the Performance Package. Fuel economy for the EcoBoost is 22 mpg city/33 mpg highway/26 mpg combined, and 21/29/24 with the Performance Pack. It used to be about style for the base cars and cheap speed for the more-powerful ponies.

Elio Motors, which has been struggling since 2009 to build its own ultra-cheap, small, fuel-efficient, three-wheeled car, announced Thursday that it will source an engine from a major automaker. Previously, the company planned to build its own 3-cylinder engine with up to 55 horsepower for its projected 84-mpg three-wheeler.

The good news is that it has electronic fuel injection and an overhead camshaft. Even better news during a time of recession in California (which is where I found this car) is the fuel economy it delivered with a five-speed manual transmission: 40 miles per gallon on the highway, 38 miles per gallon in the city.

It’s one of the brand’s biggest markets and it’s also a source of relatively cheap labor — ensuring the Mirage can be a competitively priced global product. The above hasn’t helped sales.
