BMW Group and H2 Green Steel have signed a final contract on the delivery of CO 2 -reduced steel. The agreement addresses BMW Group’s upstream scope 3 emissions and includes recycling and end-of-life management measures. Earlier post.). The BMW Group intends to source aluminum with significantly reduced CO 2 emissions from Rio Tinto’s hydro-powered operations in Canada starting in 2024 and has signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect. The BMW Group intends to become one of the first customers to use this technology in standard production.

The BMW Group has begun series production of the BMW i3 electric vehicle ( earlier post ) at its plant in Leipzig. The body structure of the BMW i3 consists entirely of lightweight and durable carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP); this is the first time the material has been used in automotive volume production.

The heads of BMW, Volkswagen, and Renault have spoken out against European Union’s emission targets in recent days, arguing that the phase-out rules put too much pressure on the industry and that consumers aren’t buying EVs fast enough. In any case, EU has said that it will review the CO2 policy again in 2026 to see how things are going.

BMW dedicated a portion of its recent Innovation Days 2009 event to the topic of Intelligent Heat management as a mechanism for reducing fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. BMW engineers are working on largely avoiding cold start conditions through intelligent heat management and significantly shortening the warm-up period.
