GE Durathon batteries successfully power underground mining scoop

Green Car Congress

In trials, GE’s sodium metal halide Durathon batteries ( earlier post ) have successfully powered GE Mining’s Scoop, an underground vehicle that transports mining materials, at Coal River Energy, LLC in Alum Creek, West Virginia. Additionally, the battery contains no lead acid materials. Click to enlarge.

Stanford study quantifies energetic costs of grid-scale energy storage over time; current batteries the worst performers; the need to improve cycle life by 3-10x

Green Car Congress

Using a new metric—“Energy Stored on Invested, ESOI”—they concluded that batteries were the worst performers, while compressed air energy storage (CAES) performed the best, followed by pumped hydro storage (PHS). The five battery technologies fared much worse. PHS followed at 210.

A closer look at minimizing AC charging losses: From the breaker to EV (Part 1)

Charged EVs

In this article we’ll be taking a closer look at ways to minimize charging losses that are under the control of either the manufacturer or the owner of the EV (in other words, excluding things like changing the electrical generation source from coal to nuclear or solar, as helpful as that would be). EV battery. circuit breaker ?

Greentech Media | ECOtality CEO: Fast Charging and Why Battery Swapping Is Doomed

Tony Karrer Delicious EVdriven

Email ECOtality CEO: Fast Charging and Why Battery Swapping Is Doomed Jonathan Read discusses why electric vehicles and fast-charging systems, not battery-replacement systems such as the one touted by Project Better Place, are the future. Battery technologies are advancing rapidly. Electricity costs are relatively inexpensive.
