Daimler has concluded customer field trials with eight pre-production Fuso Canter E-Cell electric trucks ( earlier post ) in Portugal. FUSO developed the battery-powered and locally emission-free Canter E-Cell at the Daimler Trucks Center of Competence for Hybrid Technology.

Increased electrification of transportation, including inland waterway transport, will play a key role in helping Portugal achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The new ferries will be powered by battery packs with a total capacity of 1,860 kWh each. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

The EU project FCH2RAIL (Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Pack for Rail Applications) consortium—with partners from Belgium, Germany, Spain and Portugal—is developing and testing a new zero-emission train prototype. When there are no overhead lines, the energy will come from the fuel cell and battery system.

The project will focus on driver behaviour and the operational side of running a fleet of zero-emission battery-powered cars. The thirteen countries involved in the agreement are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Such an undertaking would not be possible, using purely battery-powered electric vehicles. The fuel cell vehicles will travel through 14 countries: from southern Europe, through France, Spain and Portugal, the cars will continue on to North America, where they will drive through both the USA as well as Canada.

The Opel Ampera will then be rolled out throughout France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom from the beginning of 2012. In addition, customers will receive advice on energy-efficient driving in battery operation and how to recuperate energy when braking. The wheels of the Ampera are electrically driven at all times.
