We will get to how it all works in a moment, but the short version is that, while you still get a petrol engine with your electric motors, the former is only used to recharge the battery or deliver power to the motors — it never actually drives the wheels — giving you what Nissan calls an “EV-like” drive experience, and improved fuel efficiency.

Cheapest is a 2011 version with 48,800km, but the owner admits battery health is close to 50 per cent, its dash shows a range of 90km and real world range is closer to 68km. Original range was around 150km, but you’ll be lucky to get 100km on one today, unless it’s had a fresh battery pack.

Europe’s most affordable EV the 2024 Dacia Spring SUV is now available in right-hand drive, which means there’s a chance it could be coming to Australia as a Renault. That said, the tiny 26.8kWh battery keeps total kerb weight down to just 984kg – just 6kg more than before, promising for a nimble, agile drive.

Tesla Model 3 587km: Mercedes-AMG EQS53, $324,800 Rapid, high-priced AMG limo uses huge 107.8kWh battery for its 587km range, but fully exploit the EQS53’s 484kW and 950Nm and possible distance will quickly tumble.
