The US auto industry, via the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, is lining up to support a new national, harmonized program to reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption that President Obama will announce on Tuesday, 19 May. The bill charges state regulatory authorities and non-regulated utilities to ensure that the charging infrastructure is “interoperable with products of all auto manufactures to the extent possible” and to consider adopting minimum requirements for the deployment of the charging infrastructure. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to grant California’s request to carry out its own clean car standards not only clears the way for the Schwarzenegger-led state to cut its own greenhouse gas emissions, but it is likely to effect at least 13 additional states too.
