The restructuring of the auto industry following the collapse of General Motors and Chrysler continued yesterday when GM confirmed it had signed a stock purchase agreement with Koenigsegg Group AB for the sale of 100 per cent of the shares of Saab Automobile AB.

With payments of up to $4,500 for motorists willing to swap their ageing gas guzzling vehicles for more fuel efficient ones, it seemed like a ‘can’t lose’ scheme with consumers getting cheaper cars, the automotive industry enjoying more sales and the environment boosted by a reduction in harmful emissions.

In the past the auto industry has responded to incentives and guidelines set by government agencies and reengineered their product to meet this requirement. We can set a goal to have every new vehicle purchased be a PHEV.

Two German investors, Ingo Voigt and Fritz Nol, announced their intent to buy Fisker Automotive, the failing plug-in hybrid car company, on 11 September. The program backs automotive companies that offer both green energy initiatives, such as increased fuel efficiency, and new auto industry jobs in the United States.

30 mpg is nice, but it took them 20 years to get there, while the Hondas and Toyotas of the world have been quietly churning out great cars that great mileage for years, not to mention every GM vehicle Ive owned is a pile of garbage, including my current one. Ill never purchase one again, no matter what the mpgs. Let them go bankrupt.
