As the number of electric vehicles on the world’s roads explodes, electric utilities are grappling with increasing demand while simultaneously having to stabilize their grids where more intermittent renewable-energy sources like wind and solar are coming online. That’s the promise of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

And in the last two weeks, one of the largest utility companies in the United States, Pacific Gas & Electric, announced plans to work with General Motors in experiments with their bidirectional charging technologies. These V2H/V2G-enabled vehicles offer some three to 10 days powering the fridge and lights in case the power goes down.

The interesting thing is before electric cars were popular, no one in the auto industry or mainstream media even questioned where petrol or the metals used in engines are coming from. Also EV’s have another advantage, as the grid gets cleaner your EV will emit less and less emissions.
