With a range of 200 km (124 miles) and charging time of just two hours, the Maxus EV80 is expected to be suited to businesses with typical usage cycles that incorporate predominantly urban routes. It is available initially to fleets in France, Germany, Austria and Benelux, with other markets to follow soon.

The truck was officially launched at an event in Austria. The Volvo Penta electric driveline also brings benefits such as zero exhaust emissions and significantly reduced noise levels. The RTs will now be sent to fire departments in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai to begin real-world customer testing.

BEVs charged with electricity generated from coal currently have higher life-cycle emissions than ICEVs, whereas the life-cycle emissions of a BEV could be almost 90% lower than an equivalent ICEV using electricity generated from wind power. So far, only two EU Member States (Austria and Sweden) have reached the 10% target.

A new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) suggests that new road charges for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs or lorries) should reflect the varied health effects of traffic pollution in different European countries. This means charges should be much higher in some countries compared to others, according to the (EEA).

EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) is a European classification used for engines which comply with a more stringent exhaust emission standard that reduces particulate emissions by roughly a further one-third compared to Euro 5 limits. Additional exhaust gas aftertreatment is not necessary.

At 48 volts, a VTES electric supercharger will transform 7kW of battery power into a highly boosted charge of air for downsized gasoline and diesel engines. The company has commissioned AVL to build the demonstrator, which is currently undergoing final shake-down trials in Austria in readiness for evaluation by vehicle manufacturers.
