The BMW eDrive Zones service, now standard in various BMW plug-in hybrid models, uses geo-fencing technology via GPS. Besides that, there are 20 other core areas of major cities in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Switching to the purely electric driving mode is automatic.
