DOE Awarding $620M for Smart Grid Demonstration and Energy Storage Projects

The US Department of Energy is awarding $620 million for projects around the country to demonstrate advanced Smart Grid technologies and integrated systems. These 32 demonstration projects, which include large-scale energy storage, smart meters, distribution and transmission system monitoring devices, plug-in vehicles, and a range of other smart technologies, will act as models for deploying integrated Smart Grid systems on a broader scale. 500 kW Solar PV system goes online at Fords Michigan Assembly; 2 MWh energy storage system

The system is the result of collaboration between Ford, DTE Energy, Xtreme Power, the city of Wayne and the state of Michigan. Ford collaborated with DTE Energy to install the 500 kW solar photovoltaic panel system at Michigan Assembly. The system will be integrated with a 750-kilowatt energy storage facility that can store 2 million watt-hours of energy using batteries. The plant will also produce Focus Electric, C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid.

John Goodenough from the University of Texas as Austin, has found one of the most effective catalysts yet discovered for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for use in water-splitting to produce hydrogen or in rechargeable metal-air batteries. A paper on the research, which was supported by the US Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Initiative, the National Science Foundation, the Toyota Motor Corporation and the Chesonis Foundation, is published in the journal Science.

NTU Singapore team develops ultra-fast charging Li-ion battery with new TiO2 gel anode material

A battery equipped with the new anode material can be recharged up to 70% in only 2 minutes. In their paper, they note that this protocol to synthesize elongated nanostructures can be extended to other nanostructured systems, opening up new opportunities for manufacturing advanced functional materials for high-performance energy-storage devices. Nanostructuring also results in lowered volumetric energy density, which could be a considerable problem for mobile applications.

The possibility of a flow-through mode for the cathode allows flexibility of the cell design for safe, large-capacity electrical-energy storage at an acceptable cost, they conclude.
