Late last year, Volvo launched its very first all-electric model in North America. Where it falls down is its EPA-rated range: a mere 208 miles. We logged energy consumption at 41 kWh per 100 miles. That wouldn’t provide even 200 miles of range. The electric XC40 comes from Ghent, Belgium, incidentally.

The shift-by-wire single speed transmission drives all four wheels 0-60 miles per hour in about 4.3 The EPA rates the C40 Recharge Twin AWD at 226 all-electric miles (AER) with an efficiency of 39 kWh per 100 miles. In the 310 total miles we drove through Southern California we averaged 30.6 kWh per 100 miles.
