Four California state agencies and the independent power grid operator have released a new plan and vision for California’s energy future in advance of the Air Resources Board consideration of a first-in-the-nation rule requiring that a third of California electricity come from renewable sources by 2020.

The carport will enable NSA Mid-South to recharge its current fleet of 17 electric vehicles with renewable electricity in approximately four hours, while reducing demand on the commercial power grid. Since then, the carport has successfully generated enough electricity to power more than 60 typical homes for a day.

In two packages of awards, the California Energy Commission approved more than $44 million to expand the hydrogen fueling infrastructure and increase the number of alter alternative fuel vehicles on the road in the state. Although early EV owners frequently had to rely on their own power, or install level 2 chargers in their homes, already the public charging infrastructure has rapidly caught up to the needs of EV drivers. While this is also a con, limiting charging to private use means there will be less competition for the available power.
