There has been much discussion for over thirty years or more around the use of hydrogen fuel cells as an alternative to the internal combustion engine. Fuel cells had been promoted in some sectors as the best alternative to the internal combustion engine.

To further cost-reduction through the use of common parts, the new Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid bus is powered by two fuel cell systems of the same type used in the B-Class F-CELL. The operating range of the fuel cell bus is around 250 kilometers (155 miles). The project is part of the Clean Energy Partnership in Hamburg and Berlin.
