These projects put more than 9,000 alternative fuel and energy-efficient light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on the road, and establish 542 refueling locations across the country. The project will deploy 502 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through 119 public and private fleets throughout the state.

Although plug-ins could significantly reduce oil consumption and those associated greenhouse gas emissions, the electricity used for charging the batteries would need to be generated from lower-emission fuels such as nuclear and renewable energy rather than the fossil fuels for PHEVs to reach their full potential.

The Niro isn’t plugged in to recharge the battery but does have a very efficient regenerative charging system that converts kinetic energy into electric energy, when applying the brakes or coasting, and stores it in the battery. Where the Niro comes up a bit short is on the highway where road imperfections can be felt.

One can be quite encouraged by the 30 odd alternative fuel cars of all shapes and sizes. I should feel heartened that battery electrics predominated, if you include NEVs and bikes. The production of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles and electric bicycles is picking up. A real car, by any measure.
