German utility STEAG is investing around €100 million in grid energy storage systems (ESS) totalling 90 MW, equipped with Li-ion cells from LG Chem. Using the existing plant sites provides synergies in the infrastructure and therefore keeps the investment costs low, STEAG said.

Battery materials company Nano One Materials has entered into a binding agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Johnson Matthey (JM) Battery Materials Ltd. JMBM Canada) for approximately C$10.25 million (US$8 million). The Candiac production facility was acquired by Johnson Matthey in 2015 and has been in operation since 2012.

Vattenfall and the BMW Group have signed a contract for the delivery of up to 1,000 lithium-ion batteries this year. Vattenfall will purchase the new batteries from the BMW plant in Dingolfing and use them in all storage projects. Other possible applications would be electricity storage in private households.
