Alberta Innovates & NRCan awarding $26.2M to three oil sands clean tech projects; industry kicking in $43.3M

This announcement is a result of NRCan’s Oil and Gas Clean Tech Program. Cenovus Energy will test an oil sands extraction technology using a solvent-driven process.

Suncor Energy and partners proceeding with $13.5B Fort Hills oil sands project; 180 kb/d planned bitumen capacity

and Teck Resources Limited, is proceeding with the Fort Hills oil sands mining project, located 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Fort McMurray. The project is scheduled to produce first oil as early as the fourth quarter of 2017 and achieve 90% of its planned production capacity of 180,000 barrels per day within 12 months.

Suncor Energy Receives Conditional Regulatory Approval for Oil Sands Tailings Management Plan; Projected 30% Reduction in Volume

Suncor Energy has received conditional approval for its oil sands fluid tailings management plan from Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board ( ERCB ). Tailings are a mixture of fine clay, sands, water and residual bitumen produced through the oil sands extraction process, and are held in massive “ponds”.

Statoil greenlights $7B Mariner heavy-oil project in UK North Sea

Statoil has made the investment decision to develop the Mariner heavy oil field development in the UK North Sea. Pending final approval of the field development plan by the UK authorities, Statoil expects to start production from Mariner in 2017.
