Even as vehicles become more fuel-efficient, the unending market shift toward crossover utilities, SUVs, and trucks kept the overall average U.S. For 2017, sales-weighted new-car fuel economy landed at 25.2 mpg, an improvement over 2016 of just 0.1 new fleet efficiency stagnant for the fourth year in a row.

Ford is increasing production of two popular full-size SUVs to meet increasing retail demand for both models. The company is increasing line speed at its Kentucky Truck Plant to build more Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs, boosting production targets approximately 25% since last fall when the SUVs hit the market.

Acura’s first hybrid SUV, the 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid ( earlier post ), will arrive at showrooms in early April with more than 30 additional horsepower and a 45 percent higher EPA city fuel economy rating as compared to the conventionally-powered MDX SH-AWD. The 2017 MDX was designed by the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, Calif.

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee mid-size SUV has become the second gasoline-driven, US-made, US-brand vehicle to qualify for Japan’s Eco-Car tax break. Jeep is Japan’s top-selling US vehicle brand; sales hit a record high of 9,388 in 2016—a 31.7% mpg US, 10.4 million sales in 2016—a year-over-year increase of 9%.
