Neste recently launched a renewable diesel made entirely from waste and residues under the brand name Neste MY Renewable Diesel at select service stations in the Helsinki region today, 9 January 2017. During January, sales of Neste MY will also expand to select Neste Truck stations for heavy traffic in Finland.

North European Bio Tech Oy (NEB) has made an investment decision concerning the construction of a bioethanol plant on the Renforsin Ranta industrial estate in Kajaani, Finland. The plant is projected to begin production in mid-2016. The raw material for the plant will be sawdust from local sources. —NEOT CEO Henrikki Talvitie.

In April, the company started operating a hydrometallurgical facility in Harjavalta, Finland that is today Europe’s largest closed-loop recycling facility. In March, Fortum Battery Recycling started its first commercial operations in Germany, Kirchardt, as the first mechanical processing plant was opened.

Woody biomass, including waste wood, will be converted to lignin, (nano-) cellulose and (hemi-) cellulosic sugars, and further converted to lignin derivatives and chemicals. The demonstration project will run for 3 years. The overall budget is €16.2 million (US$18 million) with a €9.9-million million (US$11-million) contribution from BBI JU.

Global GHG emissions continue to be dominated by fossil carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, which however show a slowdown trend since 2012, and were stalled for the third year in a row in 2016. CH 4 is mainly generated by agricultural activities, the production of coal and gas, as well as waste treatment and disposal.
