Medium-sized battery-electric cars are on average 14% cheaper to run than equivalent diesels today, if slow charging overnight near home and/or fast charging at preferential rates are available. T&E’s lifecycle CO 2 emission calculator estimates that today EVs cut CO 2 emissions by two-thirds on average across Europe compared to diesel cars.

As expected, the combination of fewer diesel registrations and more SUVs continued to have an impact on emissions. Despite an increase of EV models contributing positively to emission levels, the move away from diesel had a negative impact, one that the market could not offset. BEVs for every diesel car registered.

Affordability is clearly a major barrier. ECV market share of 5 biggest EU car markets in 2016. Lowest ECV market share in EU in 2016. Consumers looking for an alternative to diesel now often opt for petrol vehicles or hybrid ones, but aren’t yet making the switch to electrically-chargeable cars on a large scale.

Overall auto volume was 19,366 units, up some 19% YoY, and the highest March sales since at least 2016 (though compensating from a hangover earlier in Q1). Petrol-only vehicles saw their lowest share in modern history, taking just 1% of the market. Overall, HEVs have been on a long term decline since mid 2020.

With CAFE emphasising fuel economy and increasing the target from 26mpg in 2010 to 35.5mpg in 2016, GM is focusing on getting greater mileage out of existing petrol engine technologies. However, the new GM has chosen to turn its back on diesel technology and has tabled plans for a 4.5l diesel engine for light trucks.

I used to be excited by those electric cycles back in 2016/17. Also car manufacturers are not launching affordable electric cars. All it takes, is one startup like Strom or OLA electric to launch a small electric hatchback at affordable rates. That will get these BIG ICE OEM's to launch affordable EV's.
