Part of the gas can also be used to produce the hydrogen (by steam reforming and water-gas shift) needed to upgrade the biocrude via hydrotreating.

A Sandia National Laboratories project team, including a number of industry partners, is designing and building a cold-ironing fuel cell system that will be deployed in the Port of Honolulu in 2015. Ports have been a major source of water and air pollution in the US, but remained relatively unregulated until recent years.

A recent project demonstrated a 100 kW fuel cell generator with 72 kg of hydrogen storage for marine applications. From August 2015 to June 2016, Young Brothers used the generator on 52 different days for a total of 278 hours. The generator was trucked back to Young Brothers and off-loaded for continued use. From 2015 onward, it will serve the E39 route between Lavik and Oppedal, across the Sognefjord. As a catamaran with two slim hulls, it offers less resistance in the water than a conventional vessel. These serve to recharge the ferry’s battery during turnaround and are then themselves slowly recharged from the local grid.
