The joint research flight campaign has been given the title ND-MAX/ECLIF 2 (NASA/DLR-Multidisciplinary Airborne eXperiments/Emission and CLimate Impact of alternative Fuel).

The California Energy Commission recently approved seven awards totaling $29,675,072 and that are funded through the Commission’s Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program (AB 118), completing the first two years of the program funding cycle. Biostar Systems ($3,372,314 - Match Share $3,372,314).

The second ( DTMA-91-R-2013-0009 ) will award up to $500,000 for a comprehensive study on the issues associated with the bunkering (supplying a ship with fuel) of LNG for marine vessels. Projects that will be funded under the RFP include engine conversion/retrofits; the use of alternative fuels; or the use of alternative technologies.

NASA researchers have begun a series of flights using the agency’s DC-8 flying laboratory to study the effects of alternate biofuel on engine performance, emissions and aircraft-generated contrails at altitude. Survey black carbon and gas-phase emissions and contrail properties from commercial aircraft at cruise in air-traffic corridors.

Audi remains convinced of the potential of the fuels e-gas, “e-benzin” (e-gasoline) and e-diesel and is continuing to pursue its e-fuels strategy. For Audi, e-fuels are more than just a subject of research in laboratories. Since 2013, the brand with the four rings has been offering renewable Audi e-gas on the market.

Corrosion can result in failures, leaks and contamination of groundwater, a source of drinking water. Such retrofits could cost an estimated $1,500 to $2,500 each; there are more than 500,000 underground gas storage tanks around the country. The sump pumps move fuel from underground tanks to the fuel dispensers that pump gas into cars.

The hybrid material effectively catalyzes the conversion of liquid water to hydrogen gas while remaining stable in an acidic environment. The project branches off from the Brookhaven group’s research into using sunlight to develop alternative fuels. One key step is splitting water (water electrolysis).
