The HACLA fleet has now accumulated ~10,430 miles (16,785 km) all-electric and 14,430 total miles (23,223 km); 4,000 fuel-driven miles when extended range was necessary. The fleet is achieving an equivalent of 88 mpg (2.67 kg) of carbon-dioxide per-day-per-auto when driven to the EV range.

Opel will debut the new Astra at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show; the company will also showcase the Ampera, Opel’s implementation of the Voltec extended range electric vehicle architecture. L/100 km (48 mpg US) on average and emits no more than 129 g/km CO 2. L/100 km (56 mpg US) will be added to the range in spring 2010.

Shanghai GM has outlined the next phase of its “Drive to Green” product strategy—launched in 2008 ( earlier post )—for 2011-2015. In 2011, the new Buick LaCrosse Hybrid, which will have 20% better fuel economy than the standard model, and the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range capability will be introduced.

The Ampera goes on sale in Europe in 2011, the Spark in early 2010. The Ampera is an extended range electric vehicle based on the Voltec technology used in the Chevrolet Volt. Equipped with a 16 kWh Li-ion battery pack, the five-door, four-seat hatchback has a battery-powered range of up to 60 km (37 miles) (MVEG cycle).

Extended-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Volt, which GM says will recharge in three hours — offer another route, adding a small gas engine to keep drivers from feeling stranded without access to fuel. With a 55KWH battery, range is only 157 miles. My Honda Civic averages 34+ MPG over a year period.
