General Motors is preparing to launch two more extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), CEO Dan Akerson told reporters on the sidelines of the 2011 Automotive News World Congress. Detroit Free Press.

In 2011, the largest dollar volume for Li-ion automotive applications could come from the mini EV and EREV segment. Dividing that forecast in to application segments—micro-, mild-, full-, and plug-in hybrids; mini-electric (e.g., PHEVs and EREVs require $7/gallon. The 8 kWh battery pack for the new 2011 Buick PHEV crossover vehicle is prepared for testing at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011.

For use in motor vehicles, Hitachi Chemical has developed graphite-based anode materials with high capacity density and discharge efficiency for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with a focus on extending range. Production rate was rising as of July 2011.

Power density ranges from 4,590 W/kg for the 4Ah cell to 5,300 W/kg for the 8 Ah cell.

BYD to announce US launch plans for EVs and PHEVs at NAIAS

Ltd (BYD) will reveal plans for the launch of US-ready electric drive vehicles and clean energy products at the upcoming 2011 North America International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Equipped with a BYD Iron-phosphate FE battery pack, the e6 Premier has an expected range of 300 km (186.4 liter gasoline engine.

Audi announces A3 e-tron battery electric vehicle pilot program in US

Audi introduced the battery-electric Audi A3 e-tron US pilot program at TED2012 in Long Beach, California. This marks Audi’s first foray into the rapidly developing US electric vehicle landscape. At low temperatures, the system is aided by an electric PTC heating element; an air conditioner is activated in hot weather.

GM Expects Chevrolet Volt to Deliver 230 mpg in City Driving Based on EPA Draft Methodology

Based on the same draft EPA methodology, the Volt would also deliver “ triple-digit ” combined cycle fuel economy along with combined cycle electricity consumption of 25 kWh/100 miles, according to GM. At the US average cost of electricity (approximately 11 cents per kWh), GM calculates that a typical Volt driver would pay about $2.75
