A unique joint project between carmaker Volvo and Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall is to see the production of battery-powered Volvos featuring plug-in hybrid technology as early as 2012. Volvo is also investing in the development of biogas compatible cars. The car’s range on gas is about 300 km.

In April, Axion Power International Inc received an order from Norfolk Southern Corp (NS) for PbC lead-carbon batteries for use in an all-battery-powered switcher locomotive. NS originally built NS-999 in early 2009 with lead–acid batteries; however, the lead–acid system consistently failed field testing.
