Canada’s federal government is awarding $908,280 through FedDev Ontario’s Investing in Business Innovation initiative to help algal biofuel startup Pond Biofuels accelerate the commercialization of its technology used to capture carbon dioxide from raw stack emissions and produce algae that can subsequently be converted into biofuels.

The Bio-SPK process converts bio-derived oils (triglycerides and free fatty acids) to Bio-SPKs. The removal of the oxygen atoms raises the heat of combustion of the fuel and the removal of the olefins increases the thermal and oxidative stability of the fuel. IATA 2008 Report on Alternative Fuels.

Currently, only alternative fuel vehicles are exempt from the London Congestion Charge. Their outputs currently range from 89g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2) to 219g/km of CO2. Volvo believes the principal of hybrid cars being exempt from the charge is outdated. It’s easy to see why Volvo is so keen to point out the discrepancy.

The carbon intensity of the DME will vary with the feedstock, but with the use of bio-gas (biomethane) from an anaerobic digester as input into the Oberon process, DME can provide up to a 95% CO 2 reduction compared to diesel. Volvo Truck’s DME announcement comes in the context of many years of alternative fuel and driveline development.
