Suncor is targeting 1 million barrels per day output in 2020, with its growth in the oil sands underpinned by its alliance with Total. Approximately 80% of that production will be from the oil sands. The agreement with Total is an important element of Suncor’s plans to more than double our oil sands production.

The US State Department has issued a Presidential Permit to Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership to enable construction of the Alberta Clipper pipeline for the transport of crude oil from the Canadian oil sands to US refineries. Devon and BP will also form a heavy oil joint venture to develop BP’s Kirby oil sands leases in Alberta, Canada. In order to facilitate the oil sands joint venture, Devon will acquire 50% of BP’s interest in the Kirby oil sands leases. The Whiting upgrade is planned to come on-stream in 2012.

Statoil has made the investment decision to develop the Mariner heavy oil field development in the UK North Sea. The field was discovered in 1981 and Statoil entered the license as operator in 2007 with the aim of finally unlocking the resources. The heavy oil project will require pioneering technology in order to be developed.
