Statoil has made the investment decision to develop the Mariner heavy oil field development in the UK North Sea. The field was discovered in 1981 and Statoil entered the license as operator in 2007 with the aim of finally unlocking the resources. The heavy oil project will require pioneering technology in order to be developed.

The environmental benefit of a large-scale deployment of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the Canadian province of Alberta could vary significantly, ranging from a 40% to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gases, according to a study by electrical engineers at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering.

Very broadly, they found that an LCFS would buffer the economy against global oil price spikes, trim demand for petroleum, and lessen upward pressure on gas prices. Initially include within the scope of the LCFS all fuels used in on-road vehicles. We did not shy away from controversy. We are not advocates.

Damages are expressed in cents per VMT (2007 USD). The damages the committee was able to quantify were an estimated $120 billion in the US in 2005, a number that reflects primarily health damages from air pollution associated with electricity generation and motor vehicle transportation.
