Methanol, like ethanol, is an alcohol with inherent issues such as its solubility in water and corrosiveness. Most of China’s methanol supply is from domestic production. Smaller amounts of China’s methanol supply are imported from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South America, and the United States.

The oil price shocks of the 1970s led the Brazilian government to address the strain high prices were placing on its fragile economy. Brazil, the largest and most populous country in South America, was importing 80% of its oil and 40% of its foreign exchange was used to pay for that imported oil.

Based on the latest available US Government Accountability Office data (2008) the US government spent $4 billion in subsidies to replace about 2% of the US gasoline supply. It will be difficult and expensive to reach congressionally mandated levels for renewable fuels if corn-based ethanol is the main product for achieving such targets.
