ARPA-E will host a public workshop on Small-Scale Distributed Generation on 1-2 June 2011 in Alexandria, Va. This workshop will address the challenges and opportunities associated with developing low-cost electrical generator sets (gensets) with very high energy-conversion efficiency.

After my volunteer stint was over I stayed for the presentation and workshop. Overall it was a good workshop with lots of solid basic information for people who don’t know much about solar but are considering a solar electric system. The workshop was very well attended with over 130 local people showing up.

Analyst projections of future production volume for the most part are consistent with the targets set forth by ARB staff at the November 15, 2010, workshop, but caution is advisable. There is substantial uncertainty regarding commercialization potential. Task 2: Metrics.

The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The project will convert local landfill gas (LFG), a renewable fuel source, to compressed natural gas and develop five CNG fueling stations throughout the metro-Atlanta area.

As I learned at the day-long April 29th California Energy Commission Staff Workshop on AB 811 and AB 811 type programs in Sacramento, programs done on an individual city basis, like the City of Berkley’s, don’t enjoy the necessary economies of scale that countywide, JPA or statewide programs (now in development) can bring.

And the work they’re doing brings California’s leading edge fight against global warming right into my neighborhood and into my home. At community events Hampel runs a free hands-on bike tune-up workshop. The truth is, I’m unabashedly fascinated by and truly interested in the work they’re doing.
