Super-emitters are facilities, equipment, and other infrastructure, typically in the fossil-fuel, waste, or agriculture sectors, that emit methane at high rates. Methane absorbs infrared light in a unique pattern—a spectral fingerprint—that EMIT’s imaging spectrometer can discern with high accuracy and precision.

The Carbon Explorers involved in the study were launched in January, 2002, as part of the Southern Ocean Iron Experiment (SOFeX), a collaboration led by scientists from Moss Landing Marine Laboratory and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Instead of stopping after 60 days, however, the Carbon Explorers kept operating.
