Set to go on sale in early 2013, Honda’s 2014 Accord Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Sedan ( earlier post ) will offer the ability to run in an all-electric mode for 10 to 15 miles and a calculated total driving range of more than 500 miles. The free HondaLink EV smartphone application will allow owners to monitor the charging state of the Accord PHEV.

The company will deliver these powertrain kits to a dealer network to be established. With fleet mileage, ALTe projects ROI on a conversion in less than two years.

Depending upon the carbon intensity of the electricity used to charge the battery, the PHEV model can also have well-to-wheel greenhouse gas emissions relatively close to that of its electric sibling. That picture changes considerably in California, with the PHEV model tagged with 150 g/mile, while the electric carries a burden of 90 g/mile.
