Ford Motor Company and Smith Electric Vehicles US (SEV US) have mutually agreed to terminate the development project of an electric car-derived van based on Transit Connect. Azure Dynamics has selected Johnson Controls-Saft as the supplier for lithium-ion battery cells and battery packs for the Transit Connect BEV.

Ford Motor Company is extending its global electric vehicles plan to Europe with five full electric or hybrid vehicles across its C, CD and light commercial vehicle ranges to be introduced in that market by 2013. Carbon3D recently emerged from stealth mode to introduce an innovative approach to polymer-based 3D printing that it says will advance the industry beyond basic prototyping to 3D manufacturing. In a similar study, several alternative designs were evaluated for a damping bumper part on the Ford Transit Connect using CLIP technology.

This reporter recalls a presentation from the long-vanished British firm Modec, a startup making light delivery vans, which said even back in 2009 that fleet managers would see a lifetime payback on what were then very expensive BEV cargo vans. None of the “import” brands currently offer light commercial EVs in the US.
