The Ford Motor Company has selected Toshiba Corporation to supply automotive inverters for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Ford plans to start mass production of new models of both kinds of vehicle in 2012. The automotive inverters will be supplied to Ford with the motors as a set.

A study by researchers at the University of Texas found that in general, use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) can lead to an increase in ozone during nighttime hours (due to decreased scavenging from both vehicles and EGU stacks) and a decrease in ozone during daytime hours.

Ford Motor Company has awarded Toshiba a major contract to supply electric drive motors for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Toshiba Corporation will expand manufacturing capacity at its plant in Houston, Texas for production of the high-performance drive motors for HEV, PHEV and EV applications.

A plug-in parallel hybrid electric terminal tractor used to move shipping containers and cargo within the port will be tested at a Port of Long Beach shipping terminal. Over a year of full-time operation it is expected that the PHEV tractor would use 3,000 gallons of fuel per year less than a similar diesel and significantly reduce emissions.

Houston Chronicle. Texas state Senator Kip Averitt, R-Waco has filed an omnibus clean-air and energy bill that would give a $4,000 state subsidy to plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) buyers. Rick Perry first proposed a tax credit of $5,000 for plug-in hybrids buyers in his State of the State speech last month.
