The Honda 2010 Insight hybrid, which made its sales debut in the US in limited quantities on 24 March, posted sales of 569 units through the end of the month. Sales of the Insight in Japan, which began in February, have been brisk, and have helped the automaker weather the slump there.

During its first month of sales, the Honda Insight has outsold its competitors in the hybrid market. Since going on sale in the UK, 229 Insight models have been sold ahead of its nearest rival the Toyota Prius at 198 units. The Insight 1.3-litre Move over Toyota Prius - there’s a new green car leader in town.

Whoever thought the only certainties in life were death and taxes clearly hasn’t paid attention to the sales charts in Japan lately. The runners-up in the sales chart included the Honda Fit, which finished second with 17,241 units; followed by the Toyota Vitz at 12,731 units; and the Honda Insight Hybrid at 10,289 units sold.

The Prius isn’t the only hybrid model enjoying success in Japan where the technology benefits from tax breaks and subsidies offered toward the purchase of fuel efficient models. Total passenger car sales for the month were 268,450. per cent of new vehicle sales for the month. .
