The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has approved a $5-million forgivable loan for Li-ion battery manufacturer A123 Systems contingent on its hitting job creation and private investment milestones. With the new expansion, A123 Systems will assemble and commission grid-storage battery systems in Massachusetts.

Odyne Systems, LLC has delivered seven trucks featuring the Odyne plug-in hybrid propulsion system to utilities and municipalities throughout Wisconsin. Manufactured by DUECO, Inc. A second truck with a more advanced Odyne plug-in hybrid system was delivered in December 2011. The Lake Mills Unit of Wisconsin Public Power, Inc.

Under the proposed plan, the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California would be converted into the manufacturing facility for the Aurica Motors E-Car, an all-electric vehicle, as well as Aurica’s proposed PEP (Power Exchange Package) battery swap system. The PEP station concept is not compatible with the Better Place system.

In its new report Energy Storage on the Grid (ESG), Pike Research forecasts that global spending in the ESG market will reach a little over $22 billion over the next 10 years. International Battery (IB), a US manufacturer and developer of large-format lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, has been chosen as the battery system provider for the first-of-its-kind Community Energy Storage (CES) systems, developed by S&C Electric Company for American Electric Power (AEP). The requirements for CES are very demanding.

Plug-in cars are inevitable. Mitsubishi has begun to manufacture the iMiev in the thousands for the Japanese market. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins. President Obama has stated a commitment to 1 million plug-in cars by 2015. Here's my June column.
