Finding ways to deal with the impact on the grid caused by incorporating renewable energy has been the focus of Vijay Vittal ’s research for nearly 20 years.

The states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North and South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas are home to a quarter of the US population and consume 30% of electric power generated in the US. As a consequence, the Midwestern states have some of the highest levels of renewable energy on their grids.

It is generous to say that an acre of Iowa can provide 12,500 miles per year at a cost of 10 cents each. They had better think seriously about financing solar and wind arrays. During the midday hours, many grids will experience negative pricing as solar PV floods the market to the extent that the power cannot be stored.
