The far higher volumes of carbon dioxide per mile from heavy trucks make them an obvious target for zero-emission powertrains. Some makers suggest hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go; the most promising application seems to be long-haul trucking with few or no stops. But today, heavy trucks remain a diesel world.

Synovate Motoresearch presented some very interesting survey results at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference in Long Beach, CA last week, as reported in MIT's Technology Review. Ethanol contains much less energy than gasoline does, so miles per gallon will be significantly lower, as will range on a tank of gas.

The project will replace 180 diesel drayage trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with LNG trucks. The project is aimed at building the infrastructure to encourage public and private vehicle operators to convert existing vehicles from conventional gasoline to clean propane.
