Toshiba Corporation has delivered battery energy storage systems integrating the company’s SCiB Li-ion battery ( earlier post ) to Kyushu Electric Power Co., In Japan, these include a renewable power supply project in Okinawa and a large-scale urban project serving homes and offices in Yokohama.

Li-ion battery maker A123 Systems will supply a Grid Battery System (GBS) to Maui Electric Company (MECO), a utility serving residents and businesses on the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai in Hawaii. Maui Electric. and is expected to be operational in 2012.

has exclusively licensed five battery technologies from the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) designed to eliminate the use of cobalt metal in lithium-ion batteries. The advancement is aimed at accelerating the production of electric vehicles and energy storage solutions for the power grid.

Toshiba’s BESS, integrating an array of 6MW-2MWh SCiB lithium-ion batteries, will be delivered in November, and the system is scheduled to start operation in December. The SCiB has found numerous applications, including in electric and hybrid vehicles. Demand for such measures has increased with the growth of renewable generation.

Li-ion battery manufacturer A123 Systems will supply six Grid Battery Systems (GBSs) to Northern Powergrid, an electricity distribution network operator that delivers power to more than 3.8 The GBSs will be designed for peak-load shifting and to manage fluctuations in voltage on the power grid.
