Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender, with testing scheduled to begin this year. By 2030, forecasts predict hydrogen-powered FCEV deployment could top 10 million with 10,000 refueling stations worldwide.

The investment more than doubles the company’s AWD production capacity in China, with the new lines focusing on the manufacture of power transfer units (PTU) and rear drive modules (RDM). IHS forecasts China’s demand for AWD systems to grow from around 1.5 million vehicles in 2016 to more than 2.5 million vehicles a year in 2023.

FIA grants homologation to nine manufacturers for 2018/19 Formula E season. The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) released the names of the nine manufacturers that have been granted homologation from the 2018/19 season of the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship. The manufacturers are: ABT Formel E. NextEV NIO.

Novelis, the global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, broke ground on the expansion of its automotive aluminum manufacturing facility in Changzhou, China. Novelis’ Changzhou plant is the company’s first aluminum automotive sheet manufacturing facility in China. The expansion is expected to create approximately 160 jobs.

According to reports, the Indiana-built EV could be a Highlander EV, while the Kentucky model might incorporate all the leading-edge manufacturing methods Toyota has suggested in recent years are on the way. That complements the other Toyota 3-row electric SUV set to be made in Kentucky in 2025.

A team of three Cambridge graduates has today received a Land Rover Defender 110 and a cheque for £10,000, at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London, to embark on an expedition of approximately 32,000km, through 31 countries, to raise awareness of the potential impacts of climate change along the Atlantic coastline.
