While demand growth for EVs outstrips traditional petrol and diesel vehicles, buyers still have the upper hand in an Australian used electric vehicle market dominated by Tesla. That’s the findings from the Automotive Insights Report analysing March 2024 used car sales compiled by AutoGrab and the Australian Automotive Dealer Association.

Out of 82 BEVs and PHEVs that are either currently available for sale in the US, or expected to be so by the end of 2022, 67 of them, or 81.7%, have a base manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) higher than $39,999, according to new analysis from EVAdoption. Fifteen or 18.3% have a base MSRP below $40,000 and 31 or 37.8%

And I’m one those million since they’re counting plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as well as full battery electrics. Tesla Model 3 was the top seller in the state. Sales just topped a quarter-million with Tesla’s four models accounting for more than half of the overall sales. Tesla Model Y EV – 61,022.

Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.

But assuming you can get your hands on one, roughly two-dozen BEVs and PHEVs available for sale in the US this summer have a base manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of less than $45,000. Now of course it is important to point out several things: The base MSRP does not include delivery fees or taxes.

One of the proposed changes to the federal EV tax credit that has flown a bit under the radar is also one of the most political and protectionist in nature. Effective January 1, 2022, electric vehicles with final assembly* (see definition at the end) in China would no longer qualify for IRC 30D (federal EV tax credit).

Europe has gasoline taxes over $4 per gallon and still finds the need to adopt aggressive performance standards for cars to reduce GHGs and oil use.
