Greater Washington DC will be an initial launch market for the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range. Chevrolet will deliver more than 100 Volts to several utilities across the US—including Pepco and Dominion, which serve Washington DC and its suburbs—as part of an extended demonstration program.

The XR Extended Range product, using NMC Li-ion cells, allows longer distances between charge events. Last year, Proterra was selected by King County Metro in Washington State to supply buses for its zero-emission bus demonstration program. Proterra has demonstrated that this option can travel more 700 miles in 24 hours.

In the US, GM has found that Chevrolet Volt demonstration units are a popular showroom draw for dealers as they let consumers look, touch and drive the electric car with extended-range capabilities. GM says that this is part of its plan to gain exposure for the vehicle and the Chevrolet brand.

Chevrolet plans to produce 10,000 Volt extended range electric vehicles by the end of the 2011 calendar year, and an additional 30,000 Volts during the 2012 calendar year, according to Volt Marketing Director Tony DiSalle, who made the announcements during a live video webcast 1 July.
