The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. Back in ’98 when I was trying to decide on the Escape, I deliberately ruled out Li-ion because there were too many issues and you don’t want to have even on instance of what happened with the laptops, but those issues have been addressed.
