Expansion of sugarcane crop in Brazil to areas previously occupied by crops or pastureland leads to local cooling

Green Car Congress

It does so by reflecting sunlight back into space and by lowering the temperature of the surrounding air as the plants “exhale” cooler water. They measured temperature, reflectivity (albedo), and evapotranspiration—the water loss from the soil and from plants as they exhale water vapor.

They also generate environmental problems from degrading soil to runoff into rivers where they pollute fresh waters and coastal zones. However, there is only one recorded sighting of this bacterium, which grows in toxic environments. Artificial fertilizers are costly and are produced using vast amounts of fossil fuel.

This is especially the case for those draining nitrogen-enriched urbanized and agricultural watersheds, highlighting the importance of managing nitrogen before it reaches open water. Human activities, including fossil fuel combustion and intensive agriculture, have increased the availability of nitrogen in the environment.
