The #2 US automaker has made a few plug-in hybrid Escape Hybrids that have been in a test fleet at Southern California Edison for about 18 months. As with the BMW MINI E , what is stunning, if not surprising, is how quickly a decent fully electric vehicle can be put on the road. We were modeling $10 a gallon.

In an effort to further understand and expand the possibilities of smart charging for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), BMW of North America announced a second phase of its BMW ChargeForward program. BMW was the first to showcase this technology in a real-world application.

Check out the new Nissan Leaf on video: You’ve got to love the fact that Nissan had balls and the vision to bank their future on full on electric vehicles, leapfrogging their Japanese competition Honda and Toyota whose timid and safe bet on hybrids has already marked them as bridge technology car makers. Really Ford? Are you kidding me?

Both ministers drove a MINI E electric car at the event as they announced plans to support motorists by providing help worth £2000-£5000 towards buying their first electric or plug-in hybrid car when they hit the showrooms. And what better time to do this than in the year we celebrate the 50th birthday of MINI.

For example, Toyota has announced plans to manufacture the hybrid Auris in the UK (see article ) at its Derbyshire factory as it bids to make more European motorists switch from increasingly clean diesel vehicles to low emission technology. What’s more is that Britain’s car industry has a reputation for producing “gas guzzlers”.

The rear-wheel drive battery-electric (BEV) i3 Concept has been specifically developed for use in an urban environment and features a 125 kW electric motor with torque of 250 N·m (184 lb-ft) and a range of approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles). (An Earlier post.). An optional gasoline-powered range extender can provide further range.)
