In a three-year Business Finland BioFlex project, VTT—the Finnish state-owned research agency—and partners are exploring how suitable fuel oils made from biomass and waste plastics are for power plants and ship diesel engines. We are also conducting experiments to examine the suitability of the oils for applications.

Neste recently launched a renewable diesel made entirely from waste and residues under the brand name Neste MY Renewable Diesel at select service stations in the Helsinki region today, 9 January 2017. The product enables up to 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions throughout the life cycle of the fuel compared to conventional fossil diesel.

Neste plans to start selling diesel produced entirely from renewable raw materials at selected stations in Finland around the turn of the year. The new product offers environmentally conscious consumers and corporate customers a sustainable and easy solution for reducing traffic-borne emissions.

The first Etanolix plant delivered to the international market by Finland-based St1 Biofuels Oy was inaugurated in Gothenburg, Sweden last week. The ethanol plant is fully integrated into the functions and logistics of St1 oil refinery in Gothenburg and has an annual production capacity of 5 million liters (1.3 Earlier post.).

Replacing fossil fuels with Neste’s renewable fuels reduced global climate emissions altogether by a 8.3 The emission reduction is calculated by comparing the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of the renewable fuels that Neste produces in a year to the life cycle emissions of conventional European diesel.

Neste Oil is beginning the commercial use of tall oil pitch as a feedstock for refining into transportation fuel.
