EEA said that one reason for the increase in car emissions is the growing share of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The market penetration of electric cars remained slow in 2019. However, diesel cars still remain the most sold vehicle type in the EU representing 49.4% of new sales, followed by gasoline vehicles (47%), and alternatively fueled vehicles (3.3%, including electric vehicles). The average diesel vehicle sold was 302 kg heavier than the average gasoline vehicle.
